Bittu Bahanebaaz: Award-Winning AI Chatbot

Five awards across four of India's top marketing award bodies for character-led AI innovation

The Ask

JioStar Kids launched its 15th homegrown IP, Bittu Bahanebaaz, on Sonic/Nickelodeon: a quick-witted 10-year-old who uses creative solutions to escape everyday problems. The brief to eCultify was to extend the character off-screen and let fans engage with Bittu beyond the television screen. The creative challenge: turn Bittu’s defining trait—the world’s most convincing excuse-maker (bahanebaaz)—into a conversational product that feels like talking to the character himself, deepening fan connection and time-spent beyond linear TV.

The Idea & Solution

A character-led WhatsApp AI chatbot that makes Bittu your personal excuse generator. You tell him the sticky situation you’re in (late to school, skipped homework, missed a deadline) and Bittu fires back funny, creative, personalized bahanas in his own cheeky voice—not one but five excuses per jam. The two pillars were character-authentic personality and per-user personalization, which is exactly what the jury recognised across personalization, AI innovation, and customer engagement.

The Execution

Bittu Bahanebaaz ran as a multimodal AI chatbot on WhatsApp, turning the show’s hero into your personal excuse-maker. Built on OpenAI GPT-4o-mini with Whisper for voice transcription and TTS for Bittu’s audio replies, delivered over WhatsApp Business Cloud API (Meta) and orchestrated via a self-hosted n8n workflow. Conversations ran in Hinglish (Hindi + English), with config-driven safety protocols enforced through the character system prompt to keep every excuse age-appropriate for a children’s brand.

The technical architecture included:
• Multimodal understanding: text, voice notes, images, and PDFs
• Session memory (10-message context) for natural back-and-forth
• Airtable knowledge base with 5 retrieval tools (character lore, episodes, bahanas library, config)—the personalization engine
• Proactive re-engagement via timed reminder workflows and activity tracking

The result: a chatbot that didn’t just answer questions, but spoke, thought, and joked like Bittu himself.
